DeLane Califf
DeLane began her training at the age of 6 in Jacksonville, Florida, studying under Mr. Frank Spolar at the Jacksonville School of Ballet. She studied with him for three years before moving to Atlanta, where she continued her learning with Atlanta Ballet and took additional private lessons for two years. A move to Nashville connected her with her beloved Albertine Maxwell (now deceased), founder of the Nashville Ballet and Director of the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association. DeLane was honored to be chosen, at the age of 13, to attend Mrs. Maxwell’s International Summer Intensive in Bar Harbor, Maine. DeLane also studied tap, jazz, and musical theatre with Mr. Chris Lambos, well known in the Southeast in Dance and Television mediums.
As an adult, DeLane resumed taking classes and attended the Dance Teacher Workshops in New York, where she took classes in jazz, Fosse jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, modern and ballet with leading instructors and entertainers from around the country, including Daniel Lewis, Bob Rizzo, Rhonda Miller, and David Howard. She has also taken part in developmental classes for instructors.
DeLane has been teaching at Academy of Ballet for the 14 of the last 15 years. She also performed and helped direct their Nutcracker production for 10 years. She has collaborated in original ballets, such as Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, La Bayadere, Swan Lake, and La Boutique Fantastique. She has also discovered a love of costuming and prop design. Before her dance career, DeLane was in various businesses, including banking and direct sales. Besides dance, she has taught Pre-School and substituted in the Stafford County school system. DeLane has been married to Lee for 35 years and has four grown children.
